Director Nancy Bui-Thompson, Ward 2

Nancy Bui-Thompson was first elected in November 2008 to represent the 215,000 constituents of Ward 2, which includes Rancho Cordova, Folsom, Elk Grove, Gold River, Rancho Murieta, Galt, Wilton and surrounding communities. At the time of her election, she was the youngest ever to be elected to the SMUD Board and the first Vietnamese American elected in Sacramento County. Now the longest-serving member of the Board, she is currently serving her fifth term.

Nancy’s professional background spans over 25 years as a technology and management leader across the energy, government, and healthcare sectors. She is currently the CIO at WellSpace Health, a nonprofit community health center system in Sacramento. Her previous roles include serving as a Director at Health Net and Public Consulting Group, as well as consulting positions at Accenture and Deloitte.

She has represented SMUD and the energy sector on both national and international stages, participating in panels at Energy Thought Summit (2017 to 2025), DistribuTECH, PowerGen International, WE3 Summit and at the German Consulate. Her leadership and impact have earned numerous honors, including being named the 2025 ETS Thought Leader of the Year and Outstanding Woman Leader in 2024 by the Conference of Asian American Professionals. She is a recipient of the Sacramento Business Journal’s Women Who Mean Business award and was recognized as a 40 Under 40 honoree. She is a Senior Fellow of the American Leadership Forum (Class XIV, 2010). In 2012, she received the prestigious Marshall Memorial Fellowship from the German Marshall Fund of the United States.

She is a proud graduate of California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, with a bachelor of science in economics and management information systems.
